As a Marriage and Family Therapist, Joyce has worked with couples, families, children and adolescents, and groups. While she helps clients address the issue(s) they present when coming into therapy, Joyce also helps them learn new skills and ways of interacting with their environment that will enable them to resolve, and even avoid problem situations in their future.

Like many therapists, Joyce doesn’t practice from one single theory, but considers presenting needs and individual personalities in her interventions. Joyce tends to use a solutions focus approach to identify what to work on, she uses motivational interviewing to assist people identify/discover their own role in a situation, and Joyce uses cognitive behavioral techniques to help people in the development of new skills and ways to handle problem situations.

Joyce has worked with a wide variety of presenting issues, most frequently involving difficult relationships, communication problems, trauma, depression and suicidal ideations, anxiety, fear, oppositional/defiant behavior, and parenting problems.

Working in association with Christian Counseling Centers in both San Mateo and Los Altos, Joyce personally holds a Christian worldview. She does not use her position to try to impose her beliefs on anyone, and it is not necessary that her clients share her beliefs. What is most important for Joyce is that all clients who are seen in her practice feel understood and respected for who they are and what they believe, and that they see her as a partner on their journey to living an authentic life.
